PeyserPoem: Many Southern Californians Are Unhappy With Library Cutbacks

PeyserPoem: Many Southern Californians Are Unhappy With Library Cutbacks

My local library in Altadena
Is a bustling, happening place.
Reducing any library’s hours
Is nothing short of a disgrace.

Why can’t businesses donate money?
And then we’ll see signs up that say,
“This library still has regular hours
Thanks to the good folks at Frito-Lay.”

This isn’t such a wild idea for our city
To perhaps try and to do.
If memory serves, there are lots of ads
Over at the Los Angeles Zoo.

PeyserPoem: East L.A. Icon Won’t Be Spared

I know that money’s tight but
It seems both sad and callous
Since the Golden Gate Theater
Was a Twenties movie palace.

Society will be doing much better
When it’s far more often found
That drugstores become theaters
Instead of the other way around.

PeyserPoem: Mission Over For Mars Lander

Incapacitated by Martian ice, the next
Such mission might go better
If familiar maternal advice were taken
And it brought along a sweater.

PeyserPoem: Whitman Loses 50-Point Advantage

Meg Whitman’s been badly bruised in this race
As increasingly effective attacks
Revealed her particularly cozy relationship
With the unpopular Goldman Sachs.

She’s been battered with so much bad news
That what occurred to me
Was how Mount Vesuvius famously buried
An Italian city in 79 A.D.

Yeah, I know, that’s a rather old reference
For me to bring up today
But Whitman’s upbeat spokesman happens
To be Sarah Pompei.

PeyserPoem: New Station Fire Investigation

Critics question the earlier probe
That point couldn’t be much clearer
Proving that where there’s smoke,
There’s also the occasional mirror.

PeyserPoem: Guerrilla Art Will Be Taken Down

It’s such a sweet installation I’m surprised
The idea to remove it got any torque in it
Caltrans officials should rethink this plan
And just put a spoon --- or a fork --- in it.

Should The 405 Be Renamed?

Maybe ... but not for Kevin Murray
A former state senator who once got
Caught cavorting with a hooker in the
John Anson Ford Theater parking lot.

For the sake of posterity, I don't think
We ought to now take a chance on
Improving the legacy of a minor official
Who often couldn't keep his pants on.
